Displaying challenging works of art using digital technology

This paper will describe how it is possible to use new digital technology to describe and display, by representation, challenging works of art on web sites.

Most institutions have as part of their collection, works that are impossible to satisfactorily represent in static 2-D. These works include large sculptures, multi-part works and installations. New technology allows us to make these works accessible to web users in new ways, some of which cannot be achieved with any other medium.

The paper will focus on the sort of technologies that are being used to bring this sort of representation to the web, drawing on the Special Imaging project, currently being run as part of the Insight digitisation project at Tate. The purpose of this project is to draw attention to the possibilities of creating unique experiences for the web user rather than trying to emulate a gallery experience.

Issues to be addressed will include: the nature of representation; appropriate and inappropriate technologies (a subjective view); new ways of thinking about digital media on museums and galleries’ web sites and possibilities for the future. Emphasis will be placed on the imaginative use of existing and standard technologies as well as new developments.
