Alison Stones
Teaching and Research in Medieval Art: Three Sites

This paper demonstrates and discusses three web sites, on medieval art and architecture created at the University of Pittsburgh by Alison Stones and her student assistants, examining the development, present function and future potential for teaching and research. Of particular interest are the strategies the sites offer for linking teaching to research using original sources and providing students with opportunities to participate in the development of the sites themselves as learning experiences at various academic levels, from beginning undergraduates to Ph.D. Students.

The site on medieval art and architecture in France and England can be viewed on http://www.pitt.edu/~medart. Course-specific sites encompassing a broader range of material can at present be demonstrated on a limited basis for educational purposes. The research site on the Lancelot - grail project based on manuscripts from the British Library, Bodley, and other libraries will become partially available in the next few months as copyright issues are resolved. The paper also addresses copyright questions and what measure can be taken to solve them.
