Computers and the History of Art - 1999 Conference Paper Abstract
This talk describes a system that has been evolved over a period of twenty years working on the architectural drawings of Le Corbusier. 34,000 of these drawings are held by the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris, as well as a very rich archive of documents, photographs and books. Professor Benton has focused on Le Corbusier's domestic architecture in the 1920s, involving some 5,000 drawings. He has built up a database of notes on each drawing and on the documents associated with each building. In the current system, using Microsoft Access, these notes are arranged in a set of tables which can be linked by drawing number, date or a code which identifies the stage of development in a project.
More recently Professor Benton has evolved a systemt hat integrates the images of the drawings into this system, In this talk he will discuss how this has been effected and what implications this has for the ways in which it is possible to explore architectural drawings.
