The Virtual Salon: Towards a Computer Reconstruction of the Louis XVI Exhibitions

Richard Williams

A computer project on the salon exhibtions of Louis XVI's reign. Design and development issues are described, with examples of how assembling pictorial and textual sources on the computer can provide an effective study tool.

The effect of the hanging on the critical reception of the paintings is discussed, and an attempt is made to infer some of the appearance of the exhibition of 1783.
