The Conway Library is a visual information resource which contains photographs of international importance for the study of architecture, sculpture, and other art objects. Until Emmett Publishing produced a microfiche edition of the library in 1987 the library's images were available for study only in London where staff helped users find the information. Now that the collection is available worldwide, off-site access to its riches must also be provided. During the planning stage for a comprehensive database index to the microfiche certain questions arose What kind of information can the images provide? What is the best way to provide access to the information? Who will benefit from the information? The author addresses such questions and outlines plans for a relational database index to provide access to images on the microfiche for a wide variety of users. The index described also has potential application beyond the immediate project.
