Creating an image database for the Collection of the Guild of St. George Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield UK

This article discusses the development of an image retrieval system for the Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield, UK. A brief historical outline of the collection and the reasons for the need to establish a comprehensive catalogue are discussed. This is followed by the processes involved in system selection and implementation with recommendations made for other museums and art galleries embarking on similar projects. The PC-based system was developed by Image Systems Europe (Sheffield, UK) in conjunction with the Ruskin Gallery.
