The paper starts with a progress report on LASSI (Large Scale Systems Initiative), a collaborative project to procure professional standards compliant software for a consortium of large UK museums. Aspects of the potential for collections information systems, with special emphasis on the implications of sound data analysis for public access, are then reviewed. Suggestions are made regarding the need to share information between different types of museum information systems. It is argued that these ideas lead to the idea of a museum information base as a key non-human museum resource.
