The MARC (Methodology for Art Reproduction in Colour) project has developed a very high resolution digital camera capable of acquiring images with high colour accuracy. The MARC system compares favourably with conventional photography; the resolution achieved with the MARC camera is similar to that of a large-format plate camera and the colour accuracy better than can be achieved with high quality film stock. Images are stored in a device-independent format based on the CIELAB colour space, facilitating image exchange and colour consistency. A procedure for converting CIELAB images to colour separations for four colour printing on a calibrated press has been developed which allows accurate reproductions to be made without repeated proofing cycles.
