Technology has always impacted on arts and culture. Current technological developments provide a contemporary focus for debate about the value and function of the arts within society. Digital production methods offer radically different tools for creative practice. At the same time they threaten traditional artistic practices, and even conventional definitions of the artist.
The paper provides a history of Axis's development of the National Artists Register which, since its inception in 1991, has generated an ongoing debate about the effects of digital technology on the contemporary fine art sector.
