This paper starts by describing Axis's history as a national visual arts information service, core funded by the Arts Council of England. The development of the National Artists Register as a state of the art multimedia database is detailed, including plans for development on CD-ROM and online network systems. Information is provided on Artline and the international broadband network trials, funded by the European Union.
