Research currently taking place in the Communications and Image Studies Department at the University of Kent uses Giorgio de Chirico's work to investigate how computer technology enables new kinds of informative text about the history of art.
The article begins by discussing links that can be made between the space of the viewer and the pictorial space in de Chirico's work. It relates these to the interface between a computer and its user, and suggests that computers offer a useful context for studying the artist. Two hypertexts are proposed, one with the emphasis on textual information, the other with the emphasis on images. Virtual Reality is considered as a way of gaining insight into de Chirico's work. Finally, the article describes and considers the implications of the 'De Chirico City', a design for an educational virtual reality world based on the artist's paintings.
