Dealing with variable truth: the Witt computer index

Catherine Gordon

This article is an updated version of a paper given at the CHArt Conference in 1989. It sets out to demonstrate the uncertainty which can apply not only to opinions but also to supposed historical 'facts' and the ways that these 'facts' can change according to historical knowledge and interpretation. Catherine Gordon goes on to show how this shifting sand of art history is dealt with in the Witt Computer Index so that the database can record differing interpretations and 'variable truth'.
