A number of regular CHArt members will already be aware of the VASARI project. This article aims to introduce the project to readers of Computers and the History of Art and give additional information to those who already have some knowledge of the venture.
This paper discusses many aspects of colour photography and the problems associated with the attempts to achieve 'true colour' in the recording and storing of images. It then moves on to computer technology and the nature and development of Digital Cameras and to the work on the capture of images which is an important part of VASARI. It also discusses the archiving and retrieval of images and the future applications of the technology in areas such as computer aided learning and making available this electronic imaging on the PC and CD-ROM.
