Knowledge-based pictorial database management

In many practical systems, there is a growing requirement for the efficient storage and management of pictorial data. One of the chief functions of such systems is to locate, from a large collection of pictures, specific ones based on the picture contents. There have been a number of approaches to the pictorial database retrieval problem, and recent surveys of image databases in general may be found in references 10 to 13.
