An account of making an index for a book (of several volumes' length) which will constitute, when it is finished, a complete catalogue of an artist's work - picture by picture, including where known the evolution of the idea for the picture, the history of its commissioning and progress to completion, with notes on iconographical matters and on the biographies of characters involved in the story.
