The National Art Library began to use the Art and Architecture Thesaurus to supplement local subject headings shortly after its publication in 1990. This paper outlines the preliminary work towards full implementation of the Thesaurus as a replacement for in-house headings. It will be implemented as an integrated online resource supporting the work of cataloguers and extending subject searching on the Library OPAC. The relationship between the online thesaurus and the local authority file; the planned implementation and its effect upon the user interface and the project to map in-house subject headings to AAT subject strings are described.
