Computer applications in the V&A are evolving from local PC systems to multi-user, common systems. Experience gained in identifying and satisfying specific local needs results in more successful projects. Over 290,000 objects have been recorded on a computer inventory since 1988 and the next stage is to move towards a full inventory control system and a documentation system to support a V&A data structure which is being specified, using existing standards where possible. The National Art Library has nearly completed the installation of an integrated automated library system. The systems will be networked to form a central resource available throughout the Museum and externally. Local, process-based systems will communicate with common systems when object data is required.
