The Architecture Slide and Photography Library at the University of California at Berkeley has created an art image database in collaboration with Information Systems and Technology (IS&T). The system, known as SPIRO, is a fully-fledged mouse-driven Visual On-Line Public Access Catalogue (vopac) and is available on the Internet. SPIRO uses ImageQuery 2.0 as its user front-end. The paper discusses the software and details aspects of the image capture and the production of the database as well as covering copyright issues.
