The art of Piero della Francesca has been scrutinised since his 'rediscovery' in the 19th century. In particular, the composition of his painting called 'The Flagellation' has been closely studied by art and architectural historians. It has been reconstructed in drawings, models, and using computer generated images in attempts to reveal the form of its architectural setting and hidden sources of light. Based on information derived from a new computer model this paper corrects an earlier finding about the exact position of a 'mysterious' source of light in the painting.
