The Getty AHIP Imaging Initiative: A Status Report

Jennifer Trant

This paper puts forward the case for promoting guidelines in the new area of multimedia and in particular in the development and network communication of digital image archives. The issues of Intellectual Property and Education are discussed and the Getty AHIP project MESL (Museum Educational Site Licensing Project), which started in 1994, is introduced and described. MESL aims to encourage Site Licenses to prepare the way for the implementation of new exemplars for intellectual property management. 6 Museums and 7 Universities have been participating in this project. The Getty AHIP Imaging Initiative's activities in the search for the identification of standards for Image Documentation and Image Quality are also detailed.
