The European museums network: A multimedia application pilot-project

Friso E.H. Visser and Joachim Hemer

The European Museums Network (EMN) is one of the so-called application pilot-projects within the RACE-programme of the CEC. The EMN project started in January l989 and will be running until the end of 1992 as a pilot project. The aim of this project is to provide and develop the exchange of multimedia information through advanced telecommunication technologies. Information on museum objects will be available primarily for the museum's lay public. The museum visitor can access the EMN through interactive multimedia terminals in one of the eight participating museums. The information to be retrieved will consist of images, texts, full motion video, sound, computer animations, graphics etc.
